On your way to the Grand Canyon or Sedona, and looking for something new and exciting. Explore Camp Verde, the oldest settlement in the Verde Valley, the perfect high desert get-away in a moderate climate with plenty of western history, outdoor adventure, Native American culture, and ancient ruins. This great escape is generally priced below nearby Arizona tourist destinations, and offers something for the entire family.
To start exploring the Camp Verde area, start at Montezuma Castle National Monument, a 20 room cliff dwelling overlooking scenic Beaver Creek. While there sign up for a float trip on the nearby Verde River or horseback trail ride. Check out the Out of Africa Wildlife Park, an incredible wildlife preserve that recreates the African safari experience, or visit Cliff Castle Casino, voted the number one casino in Arizona for eight years in a row and counting. Other attractions include winery tours, challenging golf course, mining and railroad history, and more. Click here for a complete calendar of events in the Camp Verde area.
Camp Verde features several Forest Service campgrounds throughout the Verde Valley. Camping is allowed along stretches of the Verde River as well, although there are no developed Campgrounds. Additionally, there are many RV parks along the river, near Cliff Castle Casino, and towards all major attractions. Learn more about Camp Verde campgrounds.
The Verde River is free flowing for most of its length, allowing for lush riparian habitat and spectacular scenery. Much of the river passes through National Forest land, and is open to public fishing year round. Popular fishing access locations include Beasley Flat and White Bridge, both within a 15 minute drive from downtown Camp Verde. There, you will find bass, catfish, bullhead, and trout.
The Verde River is the only river in Arizona to be designated a national Wild and Scenic River. Discover the river by canoe, kayak, or raft. Camp Verde rafting and river guides and outfitters can get to set up, and offer several tour packages. Dry off by touring the panoramic desert on horseback on a trail ride suited to your riding experience.
Hundreds of miles of OHV, hiking, mountain biking, horseback, and 4-wheel trails can be found around the Camp Verde area. The historic Mail Trail traverses from Camp Verde to Payson along an old mail route (1884-1914). While done in segments by foot, the entire 52 mile trail is an epic journey on horseback not to be forgotten. Other trails include the West Clear Creek trail, with hidden pools and rivers, the General Crook Trail, an over 200 mile historic military road stretching across the Arizona territory, and more.
