Petrified Forest National Park - Hiking

Overnight backpacking is available in the Petrified Forest Wilderness. A free permit is required and can be obtained at the Painted Desert Visitor Center or Rainbow Forest Museum. Permits must be procured at least 1 hour before closing.



Agate House Trail Easy
0.9 miles
A 0.9-mile paved round trip leads through petrified wood and ends at a reconstructed Anasazi Indian Pueblo.

Blue Mesa Trail Easy
1 mile loop
1.0-mile steep, paved loop leads from the top of the mesa down into the blue badlands, a colorful area of cone-shaped hills in Chinle Shale.

Crystal Forest Trail Easy
0.8 mile loop
A 0.8-mile loop that leads through the trees of Crystal Forest, which were once covered quartz and purple amethyst crystals that developed in the hollows of the logs as the trees petrified.

Giant-Logs-Trail Easy
0.4 mile loop
A 0.4 mile paved loop leads past some of the park's biggest petrified logs. The largest log, "Old Faithful" measures over 9 feet at the base.

Long Logs Trail Easy
6 mile loop
A 6.0-mile paved loop leads through the largest concentration of petrified wood in the Park. The logs here lie criss-crossed atop of each other.

Painted Desert Rim Trail Easy
1.2-mile loop
An easy, unpaved 1.2-mile round trip winds along the Painted Desert rim between Tawa and Kachina Points.

Puerco Indian Ruins Trail Easy
0.5-mile loop
A 0.5-mile paved loop leads from the parking lot to ruins and petroglyphs near the Puerco River, where the Anasazi built a 76-room pueblo.
