Bretton Woods, New Hampshire Travel Guide

Complete Vacation, Recreation and Tourism Information

Bretton Woods is a resort area in Carroll, New Hampshire that is encircled by the White Mountains and the Pemigewasset Wilderness.

The area has two points of interest: Mount Washington Hotel, which opened in 1902, arousing the interest of tourism to the area; and Mount Washington Cog Railway, a train that climbs the mountain on a scenic trip to heaven.

One of the last few relics of the Gilded Age that has been restored to its original level of opulence, the magnificent Mount Washington Hotel is an awe-inspiring masterpiece that puts modern-day resorts to shame. Guests enter into a palatial lobby, which is warmed by the romantic glow of a giant hearth and attired in elegant period furnishings. Accompanying the rich setting of the gourmet meal is the view of the white-capped mountain and the engaging sounds of the hotel's own orchestra.

Bretton Woods, also known as Twin Mountains, explodes with year-round activity. There are a number of campsites in the area for those who enjoy getting close to nature. In the summer months, golf is a pleasant pastime in the fresh mountain air.

The cool, clear waters of the Ammonoosuc River entice swimmers and anglers to its shores for summertime pleasures. And hiking the 78,000-acre White Mountain region, observing the ins and outs of nature along the way, is a thrilling experience that is hard to beat.

Of course, skiing is the most popular winter sport in the area. Bretton Woods has great skate skiing and snowshoeing as well as cross-country skiing and snowboarding. At the Mount Washington Hotel, there are trails for mountain biking and horseback riding.

Jogging along the nature trails in the early morning light is an uplifting experience. A dip in the indoor pool after a workout at the Sports Club is refreshing, too. And who can resist ice skating in an outdoor arena, or snow tubing in cool, white fluff, or taking a romantic horse-drawn sleigh ride?

Bretton Woods, an all-seasons paradise, is located in the north central section of The White Mountain State on US 302.
