Decatur, Alabama Travel Guide

Complete Vacation, Recreation and Tourism Information

Decatur was founded in 1823, and saw a great deal of action during the Civil War. Having come under frequent attack, there were only a handful of buildings left standing at the end of the war.

Today, those visiting Decatur will quickly identify its popular, charming historic districts. Two special districts, The Old Decatur Historic District, and The New Decatur-Albany Historic District are listed on the National Register of Historical Places. Both areas sport wonderfully maintained architecture- much of which is in the Victorian style. Experiencing a walking or driving tour of the districts is well worth the time, and provides insight into this simply pleasant community. The Carnegie Library and the Chenault House are two special features. Maps are available at the Decatur/Morgan County Convention & Visitors Bureau.

Located in northern Alabama, those visiting will take pleasure in the beauty and recreational opportunities offered by the mountain lakes region. The Wheeler National Wildlife Refuge, established in 1938 is Alabama's oldest and largest wildlife refuge. Over 34,000-acres, it an extensive trail network, off road cycling opportunities, and a beautiful interpretive center. Nearby Wheeler Lake is a prime spot for fishing, boating, and all water related activities. Point Mallard Park is the place to go for family fun. This diverse park boasts a wave pool, water slide, golf course and ice rink! It is also home to the annual Alabama Jubilee Hot Air Balloon and Music Festival. This annual event is held in May, and draws a huge number of participants and on-lookers. The event also includes an antique car show and seafood festival.

Decatur's Cook's Natural Science Museum proudly displays an extensive collection of mounted wildlife, insects, rocks and minerals. Of special note are the interactive and hands-on exhibitions. This is a must do for those with children.

Decatur is located in the northern part of the state, approximately 30 miles south of the Tennessee border, just off Interstate 65.
