Laconia / Lake Winnipesaukee, New Hampshire Travel Guide

Complete Vacation, Recreation and Tourism Information

Lake Winnipesaukee, largest lake in New Hampshire and beautiful beach resort, has 283 miles of shoreline and serves as a summer playground for young and old. This glittering mountain lake stretches for 28 miles across New Hampshire's countryside and is freckled with 274 miniature islands.

In the words of the native Americans, Winnepesaukee means: "Smile of the Great Spirit." This piece of heaven certainly seems to have been smiled upon with its rolling hills and clean blue water, dancing in the sunshine in a dazzling array of sparkling ripples.

Majestic mountains stand proudly over the lake with the white cap of Mount Washington peeking out in the distance, while graceful sailboats sashay across the water like ballerinas in Swan Lake. Tiny islands bespeckle the water, some just big enough for a cozy cottage.

Laconia is embraced by two lakes ? Winnisquam and Winnipesaukee. It's the largest town along Winnipesaukee and home to more than 17,000 people. The commercial and cultural pulse of the region, it has a variety of small shops and eateries and a number of interesting sights.

Fun is what this place is all about. And there's plenty of it. Children enjoy Weirs Beach, its arcades and water slides. Surf Coaster USA is another hot spot for young ?uns. Big kids enjoy Laconia's motorcycle rally on Weirs Beach that draws in the Harleys for a week each summer. Tours of the Belknap Mills are open year round for history buffs to enjoy.. And a scenic cruise on the lake, followed by a night of professional theater at the Winniepesaukee Playhouse, is for the romantic at heart.

Sporting activities in the region have no end. Every type of activity imaginable is here. Hiking trails, walking tours, bike paths, boat docks and marinas, swimming beaches, equestrian trails, fishing charters, tennis courts, golfing greens and nature trails are all here and waiting to be enjoyed to the fullest. Then, there's also skiing, ice skating, sledding ... and the list goes on.

Laconia and Lake Winnipesaukee are dynamos in the heart of the Granite State.
