Yuma served as a vital crossing of the Lower Colorado River in the 19th Century and an innovator of water management and desert agriculture in the 20th Century.

Yuma Quartermaster Depot State Historic Park, was used by the US Army to store and distribute supplies for all the military posts in Arizona, Nevada, Utah, New Mexico and Texas in the 19th century.

On July 1, 1876, the first seven inmates entered the Territorial Prison at Yuma, and were locked into the new cells they had built themselves. Time has damaged the place, but the cells, main gate and guard tower remain standing to provide a glimpse of convict life a century ago.
