Description

South Fork Campground is situated along the South Fork of the Little Colorado River in a riparian area with ponderosa pine. The site was once a fish hatchery and Civilian Conservation Corps camp but was converted into a campground around 1940.

The South Fork trail (Trail #97) originates in the campground and follows the river toward the south. The trail travels to Mexican Hay Lake, 7 miles to the southeast. The ridge to the east of the campground was the site of a 400 acre human caused forest fire in May 1989. Several game trails wind through the burn area. Feel free to explore the area. It is interesting to note the diversity of the fire's behavior. In some areas it merely skimmed over the grass, in others it killed whole stands of trees. This area is fairly typical of wildfire behavior and recovery.

Tents, trailers and motorhomes up to 32 foot are allowed.
