Description
Gradual climb to alpine caldera surrounded by San Francisco Peaks. This is probably one of the prettiest hikes in the Flagstaff area. It starts in Locket Meadow and ends up in the Inner Basin. This is the only place in Arizona you will be completely surrounded by mountains.

Drive northeast of Flagstaff on US 89 for 12 miles to FR 420 directly across from the Sunset Crater turnoff. Turn left (west) for about 1/2 mile, turn right (north) on Forest Road 552. Turn right at the Lockett Meadow sign (This road is closed in early spring and late fall due to snow) and continue to the day-use trailhead. After 1.6 miles the trail will meet intersect with the Waterline Trail. Check the signs carefully to be sure you continue on the Inner Basin Trail. The Waterline Trail to the right will take you to beautiful views of Lockett Meadow and eventually the Abineau / Bear Jaw Trails. To the left, the Waterline Trail will take you to Schultz Pass Road.
